life for rent

May 2033 - Jenny Johnson is 31, Meg Stanton is 9, Padma Ramaswami is 14, Ricky Cormier is 38.

Jenny and Robert separated over a year ago after she told him about her affair with Ricky Cormier, and she moved to a small apartment on Main Street. It's the same building where she and Robert lived when Meg was a baby.

The divorce is taking a long time. Divorce always takes a long time, especially when there are children involved. But Jenny isn't contesting anything or fighting for custody; she knows the girls will be better off staying in the house with Robert. She's the one who's walking out on their family.

She hardly ever gets to see her daughters, because Robert doesn't want her to come over to the house, but sometimes Meg comes to visit after school. Jodie and Sadie are too little to understand what's going on, and Libby has been ignoring her, but Meg is always loyal to her mother.

Jenny is still seeing Ricky, although they're both trying to take things slowly.

They've been talking about living together, but Jenny likes having her own apartment. It's the first time she's ever lived alone.

She's finally free to indulge her interests and whims - to eat when she likes, sleep when she's tired, and work on her art whenever she wants.

Jenny had never had a job; she went straight from college to being a stay-at-home mom. But she's always loved fashion, so recently she opened a clothing store in downtown Providence.

She's still getting the hang of running a business.

But she loves talking to the customers and helping them choose new outfits.

The store has been growing slowly, but she finally has enough money to hire her first employee, Padma Ramaswami. She can't pay her very much, but Padma is thrilled to get a discount on clothes. The store is still small and not very profitable, but Jenny is determined to turn it into a thriving business.

  1. Seems like Jenny has had an awakening of herself, maybe rushed into marriage/family a little quickly, and is just finding out who she is and what she wanted. I hope her new shop goes well, and that her relationships will mend with the girls, and her ex-husband, so that they are civil with one another. It's best for the kids if they can get along. And I hope she's on bc so she doesn't get another little one from Ricky!

  2. Thanks for the comment, retromaisie! I really like writing about the Stantons; I think it's interesting how people change and grow and try to figure out who they are. I think Jenny will be a lot happier now. I just hope that Robert and the girls are okay. Meg is really close to her mom, but Libby and the younger girls really aren't. We'll see how their relationship with their mom develops as the girls get older.
