how much is that doggie in the window?

May 2038 - Cyd Roseland is 34, Christa Roseland is 32, Charlie is 5, Connor is 1.

Things are pretty hectic at the Roseland house. The tiny farmhouse only has two bedrooms, so for now baby Connor sleeps in the living room.

Their son Charlie started kindergarten this year, and he's a very good student. Of course that might be in part because his mother is a teacher. She always makes sure he does his homework.

Charlie spends most of his time outside playing with the dogs. Porthos and Suzie recently had two puppies, Sam and Max.

Charlie loves to help his dad train the puppies. He and Max are already best friends.

They don't really have room to keep both of the puppies, so Cyd places ads around town looking for someone to adopt one. This woman seems interested.

"We're looking to find a home for Sam," he explains. "He's very well-behaved, and he loves people."

"He's so cute!" she says. "I'll take him."

Charlie is sad to see Sam go, but he's glad his dad let him keep Max.

Besides playing with the dogs, there isn't a lot to do around here. They live way out in the country, several miles from Providence. Charlie tries to start a lemonade stand, but there aren't enough neighbors for him to sell many cups.

His father buys one to make him feel better. "It's very refreshing!"

Eventually Charlie gives up and just plays catch with his dad.

"Someday you'll be able to play catch with your little brother," says Cyd.

"Really? He's just a baby."

Cyd laughs. "He won't stay a baby forever. Soon he'll be big enough to play with."
