One sunny day in August a few weeks before the start of classes, Faith and Herbert meet John and Elizabeth Lowell for a tour of the renovated observatory. Faith and Herbert have been very financially successful, and they've decided to donate most of it to the Lowell College Physics and Mathematics Department.
"You've done such a wonderful thing for the students," Elizabeth says.
Elizabeth shows them the new telescopes for the Observational Astronomy course...
...and the new robotics laboratory.
Faith and Herbert didn't have any children, and they don't have any living relatives. They're the last of their families. But this observatory will still be here, their legacy in Providence.
Herbert loves working at iRobot. It's been remarkably successful, and through the store Herbert and Faith have become integral parts of the town. Herbert still keeps in touch with Tommy Ottomas, their former cashier. He's now a junior at Lowell College, majoring in math.
"My girlfriend and I signed up to take the new robotics class," he tells Herbert. "It looks really cool."
But as much as he loves working at the store, he knows it's time to retire. He and Faith are getting older, and they'd both like to be able to relax and enjoy their last few years together. So one night he invites his manager, Orlando Centowski, to his house to talk.
"Thanks for coming over," Herbert says. "We've talked before about your buying the store when I was ready to sell. Faith and I have been talking, and we've decided that it's time for me to retire. Are you still interested in buying the store?"
Orlando looks surprised but excited. "Well, yes. I mean, I wasn't expecting for you to retire so soon, but yes, I'd love to buy it from you.
"Congratulations," Herbert says, giving him a hug. "I know the store is going to do very well."
To celebrate, Herbert and Faith go out to dinner at the Hotel Ampersand.
"Here's to a new chapter," she says.
"Yes," he says, "it's time for a new adventure."
I renamed the observatory the Faith and Herbert Goode Observatory. I'd really like for the other buildings to eventually be named after former residents of Providence. I used Monique's computer and had the Goode family make a $100,000 donation to charity. So now even after they die, there will be some reminder of them in Providence.
How nice of Herbert and Faith to donate such a large sum, and the observatory being named after them is great too. A little piece of them will live in for future generations.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I really want my neighborhood to feel like it has a lot of history.
