December 2043 - Anne and James Smith are 43; Christopher and Margaret Long are 16; John Smith, Tom Smith, and Libby Stanton are 15; Jamie Smith is 12; Alex Smith is 10.

When Anne's father died last fall, he left Anne the family house, and they moved in just after Thanksgiving. It was hard leaving their old house, but Anne loves being back in her childhood home.

June 2043 - Jack Cooper is 40, Jillian Cooper is 39, Jackson is 14, Rachel is 12, Piper and Alex Smith are 9.

Jillian tries her best to console her son over his first breakup.

"I'm sorry sweetie."

"I just don't know what I did wrong. Why she doesn't like me anymore."

"You didn't do anything wrong. She just isn't right for you."

May 2043 - Christopher and Margaret Long are 15, Jennifer Cox and Gabrielle Wheeler are 16, Jackson Cooper and Tom Smith are 14.

In a few months Christopher and Margaret will have their driver's licenses, but until then they're stuck at home most weekends. Their parents work a lot on the weekends, and Forest Hills is too far from Providence to walk.

So when Jackson calls and says he has a bunch of friends over, Margaret and Christopher are happy to join them. "Why don't we meet at the park?"

Lowell College: Spring 2043

Spring 2043 - Juniors: Nate Centowski, Theo Centowski, Opal Raymond; Sophomores: Christian Andrews, Ellie Fairchild, Justin Kim, Meg Stanton, Aimee Wheeler; Freshmen: Isaiah Gavigan, George Smith, Tina Traveller, Riley Wilder, Curtis Wren.

There are a lot of relationship changes this semester. Curtis Wren and Ellie Fairchild are dating, although both of them insist it's not serious.

Lowell College: Fall 2042

Fall 2042 - Juniors: Nate Centowski, Theo Centowski, Opal Raymond; Sophomores: Christian Andrews, Ellie Fairchild, Justin Kim, Meg Stanton, Aimee Wheeler; Freshmen: Isaiah Gavigan, George Smith, Tina Traveller, Riley Wilder, Curtis Wren.

Lowell College finished construction on the townhouses this summer, and Nate, Theo, and Opal are some of their first residents. They share a three bedroom unit laid out on two floors; Opal and Theo share a room, and they use the empty room which would have been Matt's as a study. Nate has the downstairs bedroom and his own bathroom.

Fall is a busy time for the Smith family, with five kids in school and a mother who's a college professor.

May 2041 - Ellie Fairchild, Meg Stanton, Justin Kim, Christian Andrews and Aimee Wheeler are 17; Isaiah Gavigan, George Smith, and Riley Wilder are 16 (Sandy Fairchild is 56).

It's been more than a month since Meg and Matt Ottomas broke up, and Ellie is pretty tired of consoling her heartbroken best friend.

"You just need to meet a new guy," she says.

November 2039 - John Lowell is 69, Anne and James Smith are 39, George is 15, John and Tom are 11, Jamie is 8, Alex is 6.

This is the first Thanksgiving since Anne's mother Elizabeth died, and for the first time Anne is cooking Thanksgiving dinner at her house.

May 2039 - Caroline and Charlie Wilder are 37, Riley and George Smith are 14, Laura is 10, Michael is 6, Andrew is 4, Rose is six months.

Since the birth of their daughter Rose, the Wilder farmhouse is overflowing with kids. Baby Rose doesn't even have a bedroom; Charlie set up her crib at the end of the upstairs hallway, right outside her parents' room.

Piper Cooper learned to read a few months ago, and ever since she's been reading everything she can get her hands on. She's always loved stories, and now she can read them herself.

February 2038 - Anne and James Smith are 37, George is 13, John and Tom are 9, Jamie is 6, Alex is 4 (Justin Kim and Meg Stanton are 14, Riley Wilder is 13).

Alex loves playing with his big brothers and sister, and with four older siblings, there's always someone to play with.

November 2033 - Anne Smith, James Smith, and Robert Stanton are 33; Meg Stanton is 10; George Smith is 9; John Smith, Tom Smith, and Libby Stanton are 5; Jamie Smith, Jodie Stanton, and Sadie Stanton are 2; Alex Smith is four months.

Anne is on maternity leave for the fall semester after giving birth to Alex, the Smiths' fifth child.

August 2028 - Anne and James Smith are 28, Caroline Wilder is 27, George Smith and Riley Wilder are 4, Laura Wilder is 3 months, John and Tom Smith are 1 month.

The Smiths and the Wilders have been friends for almost ten years, and now that they have kids the same age, they try to get together regularly for playdates. This is their first playdate since the birth of Laura in May and the twins John and Tom in August. The babies are too young to know what's going on, but it gives their parents an excuse to hang out.

August 2025 - Elizabeth and John Lowell are 55, Anne Smith is 25, George Smith is 15 months.

Elizabeth isn't sure that she's ready to be a grandmother. Sure, she's excited and happy about it, but it doesn't seem like it was that long ago that she gave birth to her children. But Anne is 25 years old, married, a mother, and a professor at Lowell College. Sometimes Elizabeth can hardly believe it. What happened to her little girl?

Cabot would be 32 this year. But Cabot will always be 17.

May 2024 - John and Anne Smith are 23, Caroline Wilder is 22.

After almost two years of marriage, Anne loves having a grown up life. She's an associate professor of literature at Lowell College, although right now she's on maternity leave since she's eight and a half months pregnant.

Being alone in the house all day is starting to make her go stir crazy, so she invites her friend Caroline Wilder over. Caroline and her husband Charlie are also expecting their first child; she's due just a month after Anne.

"It's kind of exciting," Caroline says, "growing a person inside of you. Charlie is totally fascinated."

"Yeah," Anne replies, "but I can't wait for this kid to be born. I'm so huge."

August 2022 - Anne Lowell and James Smith are 22, John and Elizabeth Lowell are 52.

Anne Lowell didn't give much thought to love. She was a serious girl, she planned her life carefully - school, college, work. But she met James Smith on her first day of college, and right away she started to fall for him.

He took her to dinner at the Hotel Ampersand at the start of their senior year.

"This is so wonderful, James," Anne said. "What's the occasion?"

"Well, I had something special in mind," he said with a smile, sliding a jewelry box across the table.
