July 2041 - Ricky Cormier is 46, Robert Stanton is 40, Jenny Johnson is 39, Meg Stanton and Ellie Fairchild are 17, Libby Stanton is 12, Jodie and Sadie are 9.

"What are you doing in here? You've been in the bathroom all morning." Libby stops when she catches a glimpse of Meg. "What did you do to your hair?"

"I dyed it. What do you think?"

May 2033 - Jenny Johnson is 31, Meg Stanton is 9, Padma Ramaswami is 14, Ricky Cormier is 38.

Jenny and Robert separated over a year ago after she told him about her affair with Ricky Cormier, and she moved to a small apartment on Main Street. It's the same building where she and Robert lived when Meg was a baby.

The divorce is taking a long time. Divorce always takes a long time, especially when there are children involved. But Jenny isn't contesting anything or fighting for custody; she knows the girls will be better off staying in the house with Robert. She's the one who's walking out on their family.

February 2032 - Robert Stanton is 31, Jenny Stanton is 30, Meg is 8, Libby is 3, Jodie and Sadie are four months, Ricky Cormier is 37.

Robert and Jenny just had their third and fourth children, twin daughters named Jodie and Sadie. They hadn't really been planning to have another child so soon after Libby, and now they're the parents of an eight-year-old, a toddler, and twin babies. Taking care of two kids was hard enough, but with four Robert and Jenny have no free time. They only see each other in passing, in between bottles and diaper changes.

May 2030 - Ricky Cormier is 35, Sandy Fairchild is 45, Ellie Fairchild is 6.

Ricky is surprised to get a call from Sandy one morning. They haven't talked in more than six years.

"It's been a long time," she begins. "We agreed that you wouldn't be involved in Ellie's life, but she's started to ask about you. She really wants to meet you."

February 2025 - Ricky Cormier is 30.

Ricky's been working in the restaurant business since he was 16, first as a busboy and dishwasher, eventually working his way up to server and finally chef. Now he's finally opened his own restaurant on Main Street called The Burren.

August 2023 - Sandy Fairchild is 39, Ricky Cormier is 29.

Sandy Fairchild has gone through several incarnations -  high school party girl, popular college sorority girl, studious law student, ruthless lawyer, respected judge. She shocked the people of Providence when she first started dating Ricky - he had been only 26, ten years her junior. But he was fun and exciting, and their relationship provided her life with a much needed jolt of excitement.

But even after all of those changes, she isn't prepared when she realizes she's pregnant.
